Automatic for the People is the best. I don't own them but know that Out of Time and Monster and reveal are pretty good too.
Out of Time - Its the only REM album Ive got but well worth getting!
i liked "monster", it was a bit more crunchy than the previous ones..

Get automatic for the people first, its a bonafide classic, with a number of their best singles on.
