I've been thinking about getting a new PC for a while now. The problem is that the more I think about it, the more I can't find a good reason why I need one.

I currently have an old AMD Duron 900 with 512mb non DDR RAM and an antique Gforce 2 graphics card. It writes DVDs and surfs the net, but that's about all.

The issue is that I see so many people at work who have just bought computers or have much more powerful ones than mine, and I also do the occasional repair or training for people I know on their PCs. As they've just got in to computers they have new PCs and even though they aren't the most powerful PCs (just entry level ones, really) they're all still better than mine.

But then, why do I need one? Faster, more accurate DVD writing? Watching movies? hm...

Yeah, I know I shouldn't need one, but I can't resist tinkering with new stuff...

One of the lads i know doesnt know the first thing about PC's he barely uses it and lucky if he ever plays a game and he got a top of the range PC. I think he has had it about 4 months and he has turned it on about once or twice.

Ask him why he got it...

His friend got one, and he doesnt like someone having something better then him.

I've gotten more into the internet over the past year since I got a PC at home and am being more experimental like setting up a MySpace account (OK it sounds pretty minor but for me it's not :P)

If I find a faster PC will benefit me I'll either upgrade or buy a new one but I can't see me needing a higher spec PC for a while yet, I think it'll be forced upon me to tell you the truth by games needing a higher spec PC to run on etc.

My Ex use to upgrade every chance he got... or should i say i was to fork out for it, the latest graphics card and whatever else he needed. Im sooooo glad were not together. Im finacially better off! As for my PC it suits my needs.

But if you have the money just treat yourself! Good enough reason, works for most people.

One of my mates upgrades his PC just about every month and doesn't need to - he just wants the best PC out there when a computer half as powerful would do all the things he needs it to do.

I bought my PC about a year ago for £600 for everything and it's still way over the specs I need it to be to do the things I need it to do and I don't expect I'll need to upgrade it for a couple of years yet.

Unless you have something that you do regularly on it that would become much quicker to do if you upgraded I'd stick with what you've got.

I reckon I can get a decent PC for what I need for £340. But it would only come with XP rather than MCE. Building it is not an option with 2 kids around and limited time.

Need a Pentium or equivelent, 512mb DDR or more, decent graphics card and DVD Writer with 14" Flat Panel Monitor.

I think the only reason to update really is like you say for multimedia purposes or to play games. Though keeping a PC spec up to date to play games can be a nightmare, I spent a fortune on this thing a few years back and it's already showing its age.

If it suits the purpose of what you have it for then is it worth shelling out the dough?
