At last! I've worked it out! I now know how to do that really cool technique Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) does on so many Rage songs. In all Rage tab it just says "Selector Switch" at the start of the phrase, and on the Rage videos all you can see him do is flicking the pick-up selector switch back and forwards really fast. But now i think I've got it. Here's how it's done:

You will need:

-Electric guitar with at least two pick-ups each with their own volume control and a pick-up selector switch.
-Wah-wah pedal. (Tom Morello uses a Dunlop Original Crybaby)
-Amp with LOTS of distortion.

Step 1. Turn one pick-up all the way up to 10 (Preferably the bridge pick-up) and the other (Neck pick-up) all the way down to 0. The pick-up selector swith now acts as a "Kil-switch".

Step 2. Crank up the gain, volume, boost etc. to get maximum distorion/overdrive.

Step 3. (Optional) Kneel down in front of your amplifyer to get feedback. You don't have to do this but Tom Morello does it when he plays live.

Step 4. Rock the wah-wah pedal back and forwards while flicking the pick-up selector switch with one hand. Use the other hand to fret the notes you want to play. (I said it like that because sometimes Tom Morello crosses his arms and uses his picking hand to fret the notes and his fretting hand to flick the selector switch).

It's pretty difficult to do but it really sounds good and it's used on so many Rage songs, including Bulllet in the Head, Know Your Enemy and Wake Up. Give it a go.

it's called a "pinched" harmonic
for some ace examples of pinched harmonics, listen to zakk wylde (Last 4 Ozzy albums, Pride and Glory, Black Label society), he's the dude!

hey all, cool little thread :)

ok, here's a little thing that sounds pretty neat and looks VERY flash!! :)

it works best on the G or B strings (in standard tuning)
hit a note (for example the 5th fret on the G), bend it upwards and hold it, now tap a note towards the end of the neck with your picking hand(again, for example, try the 17th fret on the G cos it's an octave up and sounds sweet :) ) now bend the string back down using the tapped note (eg. 17th) finger and at the same time slide your original 5th fret hand up to a note inbetween the 5th and 17th frets (the 10th sounds good) and now pull off the tapping finger slightly downwards to semi strum the string again and sound the 10th fret note.

it sounds quite complex but is actually dead easy and looks flashy ;)
go on, impress yer mates!! :)

Yip, that's just one of many cool guitar tricks. This could be a good little thread to put more tips and tricks down.

Here's my contribution - it's a type of harmonic!

Hold your plectrum quite near the tip and sound a note, but try and hit the string with the edge of your thumb as you follow through making sure not to stop it dead. The result should be 2 waves on the same string that are slightly out of phase and will produce a harmonic "squeal"!

Also, you can use the trick you mentioned in conjunction with a delay pedal for even more stop-start funnnery!
