Dreamworks are one of the nations favourite for animated films, classics like Shrek have been family favourites with the added humour that adults also love. So how does their latest film stack up against the high standards they have set?
I was able to catch the previews at the weekend and after being handed my 3-D glasses, buying some popcorn, I sat down and was eager to see what the next 90 minutes would have in store for me. The first thing that anyone who has not done their homework on this film will notice is that the cast is one of the best I have seen (or heard I guess) for a long while. Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Keifer Sutherland & Reese Witherspoon are the front runners and voice the main characters along with a few others. It is always nice to hear a familiar voice when watching animated films, as I think it makes the characters seem more alive.
Right, on with the film. The story starts with Suzanne, on her wedding day, getting ready for the big event and everyone rushing about to make things go along smoothly. While Outside preparing to go in, a meteor falls from space and lands right on top of her. While you would assume it to kill her, she does stumble to her feet and make her way in to the ceremony. To which everyone is shocked at her new green glow and the fact she starts to grow at an alarming rate, within seconds she is towering out of the church and in a King Kong style take down, she is captured by the U.S. Government and taking to a secret location. While in her new “prison” she meets a group of Monsters who have been caught and kept in secret. While things are looking bad for Suzanne , a mysterious alien creature send a destructive robot to earth to recover the power that Suzanne obtained when she was hit by the meteor. It appears it grants super strength and makes people near on indestructible.
So while the world is in panic the Government sends the Monsters out to battle the robot in an attempt to save the Earth. The story goers on from there and while the outcome is obvious and there are no real big twists in the story. It is still one of the more enjoyable animated films I have seen for a while. There are some good comedy moments from Seth Rogen who plays BOB, a blue, ooze like creature who has no brain. The humour is all rather simple and one both kids and adults will enjoy. There were no stand out moments where the humour was aimed more for the adults, but it was not mindless slapstick that gets tedious after the first 20 minutes. So I was very surprised to find the film as funny as what I did.
The 3-D element is always an addition I like to see in animated films and think it adds a real stand out boost to the films. Just seeing things like rubble form fight scenes come out at you and people playing with a ball that shoots out of the screen. It does seem that many new animated films are going this way and I have to applaud it as both this and Bolt have been some of my favourite animated films, largely due to the 3-D making it more fun, and in my opinion, animated films should be fun. I think you should come away thinking that it was enjoyable and a film that you can watch again in the future. This is exactly what Monsters vs Aliens delivers.
I had not really seen too much about the film and I was expecting it to be a lower budget production with a poorly written script and little enjoyment factor. That said I am very glad that I took the time to go and see the film at the cinema in 3-D. It will not change your life by any means, or become your favourite film. But if you have kids or enjoy these kind of films, I think you will be pleasantly surprised and entertained for 90 minutes. There are no real downside to the film, other than I would have liked a bit more in the story, but then it is meant more for children so you have to let that slide. The ending was a bit poor and it would have been nice to see more aliens, monsters or some better fight scenes.
Apart from them flaws the film was good, and while I wouldn’t go buy it on DVD, if it was on then I would happily watch it again. It is a simple plot with enough comedy in and a average story to keep you interested. I do think between Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie they stole the show as the stand out characters in the film (you may disagree but they were my favourites and I found them the funniest)
Anyway, I would have to recommend the film to families and fans of this genre.
7.5/10
Thanks for Reading!
Gets a 9/10 from me,Blu Ray purchase for sure.
Still, it's equally as fun in 2D and I'm glad I went to see it, tempted to get it on Blu-ray when it comes out.
I'd give it an 8/10 but my review will be coming later!
