Got a new laptop 2 weeks ago and already I have a damn virus on it!!
And it's so unbelievably hard to get off. Never realised how hard!

Ok. Last night I'd 'only just' installed Sytsemworks. Firewall was on there, but not antivirus. Which probably makes no difference.
I know I should've put it on as soon as I got the laptop but as you do, sometimes, you get excited and want to put all your programs on there and download loads of crap to fill up the 'hole'..
Stupid!

10 minutes after it was installed, an "Alert" popped up saying I'd got a virus on it. I kept clicking Ok, but that wouldn't disappear. Came off the internet straight away!!

The virus is a backdoor trojan and the little beggar is hiding in my System32 foler..

Did a full scan and it found 2 viruses, the other one got quarantined then deleted, but this backdoor trojan won't move!! So I have no idea what to do now!!

Norton suggested a site I go to and read about how to get rid of it. Saying you need to go to your Registry Editor and remove some things from there.

I would do it, but not without a complete "Go Ahead". God knows what that'll do. I'm not at all good with the 'regedit' thing..

So.. Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever as to what I can do to get rid of this? I certainly don't want another laptop dying on me again!!

Help would be much appreciated.. Honest!

Not really as most firewall programs actually have loads of default trojan settings that will actually stop trojans from accessing the internet.

A backdoor will allow a hacker to gain access to your computer firewall or not because it tells the firewall that the port through which it gains access is allowed in both directions. This means that they can perform a various number of actions depending on what the trojan program allows them to do...this can be viewing ur webcam, accessing and changing ur files and capturing ur desktop, etc... All this is done without your knowledge.

Symptoms of the computer.

- A: drive randomly searches for a floppy disk because the hacker accidentally attempted to access the A: drive.

- The CD drive opens or closes on its own.

- The mouse acts funny.

- The screen goes on and off.

Etc...

Any other questions about hackers or viruses...im here!

Heh, it wasn't an attachment! :D
The instructions I read are easy to follow, it's just the whole Regedit I'm worried about. I'm too scared to touch anything!! But seeing as I have got the CDs incase anything goes wrong, I suppose there's not much to be worried about.

So.. A backdoor virus.. what exactly does it do?
It allows people to see your files, no? But with a firewall, they can't?
So curious!

Doing stuff in regedit is not complicated, although it is daunting as you are blindly following instructions w/o knowing what they do. If you can find instructions on how to remove the virus, follow them through. The worst you can do is break the software completely, and that can be reinstalled, assuming you have a Windows CD or a restore disk.

Ans Stop opening attachments! Particularly if they're some hilarious whack-a-mole game your bone-headed friends have sent you. 100% of the anti-virus software on a machine should be installed in the person at the keyboard - no virus can gain access to your system without you specifically authorising it, and all anti-virus software is the spawn of the devil. If a virus has got onto your system it's always your fault for allowing untrusted programs or scripts to run on your machine - I don't use anti-virus programs, and I've never had a virus in 7 years. Also don't get hackers and virus' confused - they are (largely) mutually exclusive - firewalls help prevent hackers, anti-virus software (supposedly) helps stops virus'.

Just do a format reload on it. Then install anti-virus and firewall first before you even go on the internet. A good rule to always follow is that anything you download from the internet you scan it for viruses before you even open it. Firewall should stop any one trying to send you a virus remotely.
