The USA threatens to withdraw aid from places like The Balkans unless they are granted total immunity from prosecution for war crimes.
They were granted a 12 month exemption last year and it's up for renewal.

Excuse me? You want to be immune from being charged with war crimes should you commit them?
Or you threaten little countries that were under oppressive, tyrannical regimes with no aid?

So...not only do the USA launch "pre-emptive attacks" on nations they percieve might be, not are but could possibly one day be, a threat using dodgy intelligence sources....but...also demand to be held unaccountable for their actions should they commit war crimes???

This isn't right.

Almost like a paradox isn't it?

USA "We've never committed atrocious acts against humanity. We've never committed war crimes BUT we need to be exempt from the possibility of ever being tried for war crimes. Not because, we're going to commit any war crimes of course..."

These of course being the war crimes that America are sure they've never committed and never will commit because they stand for all that's good and right in the world, yeah?

WHAT?

Yet again the Yanks offer aid with one hand and force with the other hand. No aid, unless they're immune from war crimes? How the hell can that come from a nation that criticised Iraqi tv from showing prisoners of war and who instigated Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL)?

What kind of sick world are we living in where the world's most powerful nation refuses to be made liable for war crimes yet is so eager to convict/kill "oppressive regimes" that commit the same aforementioned war crimes?

This leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

Disagree with immunity that is.

I certainly don't think it is right. But if they couldn't be persuaded to drop the immunity thing, and it came down to a choice between American peacekeepers having immunity or there not being American peacekeepers then I think you have to go with giving them immunity.

After all, the Americans are fairly civilised, and are not likely to go round shooting people willy nilly. If they shoot someone, well why were they waving a gun around? They would still do more good as peacekeepers protecting the majority of people.

But I do still disagree.
