original games that break down barriers, I myself have many times bemoaned
the lack of new ideas in the industry.
However my girlfriend who doesn't play games much has since changed my view
on this outlook, she generally doesn't play many games, but she recently
asked me to get her a winnie the pooh game, fair enough I thought, you may
want Winnie the Pooh but what good is a cutesy platform game aimed at the
inexperienced of the gaming world.
However it took me some time to realise that my girlfriend is starting out
on a path I took many years ago, it was Mickey Mouse and Donald duck games
on the master system that I loved platform games that required little
innovation, yet at the time I loved them and they really got me into games,
I then would move onto Secret of Mana, a cutesy RPG, however I was buying it
for the cute cartoony graphics more than the RPG element...I didn't even
know what RPG meant, however I soon found out and now I love RPG games such
as Baldur's Gate, Diablo etc where it is realistic, the point I am making is
that though I myself have been moaning about Spyro the Dragon, Tombi, and
cutesy platformers such as that I know have come to realise that these games
will enable new gamers to develop an appreciation the same way Mickey mouse
helped develop mine.
The reason is that they are fun to play, I used to play them because they
were fun, now I am asking for realism and wouldn't usually look at a
platform game. But my girlfriend has shown me, it doesn't matter if it is
unlikely a fat bear collecting honey, with his Tigger friend who is like a
cross between a spring and a tiger. It is fun that is all that matters.
Please don't get me wrong I am in no way berating games that are realistic I
will continue to play these, but I will now broaden my horizons to look back
to the element that got me into games, fun...Blue hedgehogs, with red
trainers...Fat plumbers jumping on mushrooms...And most importantly some
good old fashioned cute graphics, and some FUN
Some of the games are good and ones that may remain in a console for quite a while but I don't feel that this is all the developers want to do with the game, Nintendo have just signed a deal with Disney I think enabling Rare can make 12-13 games for the Gameboy Advance and naturally disney games are great to travel with and even better as parents may not want to buy a console but will buy a GBA type games machine because of the nature of most of the games, no GB games can be 18's because of the low graphics so, there are lots of reasons for this kiddy image game production....more than meets the eye!
