Hi
I am trying to fix a neighbours PC. Can connect to the net but can't find server. Ever, no matter what site. I have the PC at my house now, and tried to connect using my broadband modem. It connects but doesn't show anything either. I know it works. As such I doubt it is a hardware problem.

Also I know that the modem driver I use works too, and both PCs use Windows ME.

I tried updating IE but that didn't cure anything. I also tried repairing it previously.

I have followed the troubleshooter in Help. It mentioned Winsocks. The broken PC has winsock.dll and wsock.vxd. wsock.vxd was modified recently. Winsock32.dll and wsok32.vxd are both missing. However my own PC has those two missing and it can still connect properly.

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be?

It might be old. the PC itself is 2-3 years old. Turning off DMA fixed the problems again. And it works without it so I'll just leave it.

If your neighbours hard disk is not in DMA mode, then his/her computer has severe problems, unless it's extremely old (like pre-1997). I have an IBM 40GB disk that won't go into DMA mode, it's now quite an ugly paperweight.

Before I go any further I would like to point out that this message was posted on several tech forums and microsofts own. And no one, not anybody, including system administratots, technicians or programmers could figure out my problem. And I did.

Yes it was winsock. Replacing that and reinstalling the protocols through networking in the control panel got me the modem back.

Next up was tweaking the PC. So I went to www.pcpitstop.com. They ran their wee tests and one of the things they mentioned at the end was the hard drive was slow. I had noticed that. They suggested enabling DMA. So I did. They also gave warnings and information on it too so what happened next was my fault. I had to restart. And then windows started to boot. 15 minutes later it finished booting. And then promptly froze. Several hours worth later I got back to where I was.

So remember kiddos, only do what you are supposed to. I was supposed to fix the PC. But I went beyond that. And thats a bad thing.
