Then all that seemingly changed. Developers realized that a title didn't have to break the mold of gaming wisdom in order to appease trekkies, trekkers, or members of any other fan genus. All of the sudden we had an entire string of quality Star Trek games, including Voyager: Elite Force, Deep Space Nine: The Fallen, Klingon Academy, and Starfleet Command II: Empires at War, as well as several eagerly anticipated titles on the horizon, such as Dominion Wars, Bridge Commander, and Away Team, however is it time to call it a day?
We have seen lots of Star Trek games now, some based on ship to ship combat e.g. Klingon Academy, Starfleet Academy and then others based on planetary/star ship exploration e.g. Elite Force, The Fallen and Hidden Evil. Other types were planet/space colony building e.g. Birth Of The Federation, New Worlds and Armada.
All the games that are currently being made have all been seen before perhaps just without the excellent graphics and sound effects, but still been seen before i.e. Bridge Commander – Final Unity (well ok a fancy Stat Trek Final Unity, but still similar) Dominion Wars – Starfleet Command 1 & 2, Klingon Academy, Starfleet Academy (anymore?) Away Team - now this is quite difficult I would say it is sort of like New Worlds but its not (lets leave that one) so ok, we found one new idea but all the rest have been done before, its becoming a little boring now, if the Star Trek Genre is going to continue I think its time to get some new ideas instead of just doing the same idea time after time after time again, the only thing different with the new games than the older ones are that they are a bit more fancy and very hyped up.
Do all these companies call it a day and leave Star Trek just like the people who have made the TV series have done, or do they twist the Star Trek story line a bit and make new ideas up, and then turn them into a game.....???
