Seth Rogen has quickly joined the comedy greats like Will Ferrell & Ben Stiller. Developing his own unique style of comedy that everyone seems to enjoy, despite being more of a younger style with more swearing than what we are used to.
So while the title of the film sounds good, does it live up to the Highs of Superbad and Knocked up? Well in places yes but mainly, no. The film revolves around long time friends Zack & Miri, they live together and do pretty much everything together. Both in bad jobs and not paying their bills on time, leads to the water and power being shut off. So struggling for ideas on how the money can be raised, when they are at a High School reunion, Zack has the idea that they should make a porno. So they set off on trying to fund the film, recruit people to star in the film and even think of what film they should make. The big scene revolves around Zack and Miri doing it, now while they have been friends for many years they have never even thought about each other in this way. So this leads to complications and builds up for a more than predictable ending.
I guess the plot is pretty original but it does follow along the conventional story and it would not take a film genius to guess what will happen in the coming scenes. There are some really funny points during the film, but they do seem to be too far and few apart. Some of the cast you will have seen in more of Seth Rogen’s films and they do act well together creating some of the funnier scenes early on, but there seems to be too much emphasis on the porno, often making for awkward viewing and not being funny.
I am unable to think of any great one liners in the film that had me in stitches, and I can only really recall one scene which made me laugh out loud. I know comedy is all about opinions and this is only mine, but I was disappointed in this film. I really enjoy many of Seth Rogen’s films and they normally have some very funny moments and other good comedy actors. The film is by no means awful, it does flow well and it all ends up being rather nice, some of the humour is rather crude and at times does just seem like they are trying to keep cheap jokes by swearing.
This a side it was a more than watchable film with some amusing parts and I think if you really like Seth Rogen’s style of comedy then you will enjoy this, I do not think you will find the world’s greatest comedy by any means, but you may have yourself an hour and a half of humour. With the added bonus that some of the scenes are on the more explicit side.
Well that is about it, it is an average comedy with a few highs but also some lows. I would have to give this film;
6.5/10
