It's funny that almost any game that turns into a classic gets an update, look at these old games:
Super Mario Bros,
Castlevania,
Metroid,
Legend of Zelda,
Mega Man,
Sonic the Hedgehog,
Ecco the Dolphin
All of these are classic games, and all of them have been updated on later consoles.
But what about Kid Icarus, Wonderboy and Alex Kidd? Where these not also classics? Don't we also need these updating?

Classics they are indeed. Trouble is if a company tries to revive a classic, the game has to be really good, else it won't please the fans of the original.
It's often easier to please gamers with a completely new game (that may be in the style of the classic) but as soon as you try to make it something special, expectations go through the roof, and more often than not, it's disappointing.
Another funny thing is if a company uses it's characters in countless games they get accused of flogging a dead horse, and if they leave them in the past, the fans cry out!
