I've started a new thread as it's unlikely to be related to 'pete_21's - but you never know.
In the last few days I've noticed my router (Speedtouch 585v6) seems to be restarting if no one is using the internet connection!
My line if fairly long (50db attenuation) - so restarts can obviously play havoc with my IP Profile and Target SNR ! :¬(
I monitor my line very closely so after I first noticed some strange goings-on I first suspected my trusty Speedtouch 585v6 may be failing. Yesterday I swapped it for another new boxed 585v6.
Everything was fine until later in the day when I stopped using the internet and I noticed it had dropped the connection (and my IP Profile!!! as it was now early evening).
I'm not seeing any unusual peaks in HEC/CRC or FEC errors before the router crashes.
NB. I use a filtered faceplate in my NTE5 Master Socket so I'm happy my internal wiring etc. isn't involved.
I had managed to get my Target SNR back to the default 6db giving me a healthy sync of around 55xx on my long line and an IP Profile of 4500 since Dec 21st 2008. I've documented my 'ADSL story' here.
The only bit missing from the 'log' is when my line started going pear shaped around the 27th Feb my Target SNR has been automatically raised to 9db messing up my IP Profile with it obviously.
Any help appreciated.

The same next door neighbour that helped me yesterday!
It was nearly 10 years ago so I can't really blame him.
I had a total rewire and new consumer box etc. All decent (I thought) MK equipment!
Makes you think a bit though...
Glad to know that my Freeola ADSL connection is also monitoring the health of my electrical system ;¬)

After an eventful day I managed to get my 2Wire to keep running - no restarting etc.
BUT things came to a head later when my power went off/on in my study. Even though my power was back I thought I would check the consumer board - when I opened the utility room door I could smell a horrible burnt plastic electrical smell!
After some poking around (with some help from my electrician neighbour) the wires connecting my study circuit were found to be floating around in a melted MCB - it hadn't tripped but just got hotter!
So after replacing two MCBs and cutting out the melted wires I'm hopefully back to normal!
It seems my trusty 585v6 is more sensitive to a 'dirty' power supply than the 2Wire.
All too much excitement for me!
Just got to try and get my Target SNR back to 6db now...

Hi Eccles,
The quiet line test seems fine.
As I mentioned earlier, I'm not seeing any unusual peaks in HEC/CRC or FEC errors before the router crashes/restarts.
I use RouterStats to monitor the line and everything was running cleanly right up to each restart.
Things seem to be deteriorating!
My router is now restarting even when it's in use today (3 times so far). As I mentioned I've swapped my original Speedtouch 585v6 and power supply with a new boxed one and am still having the same problems.
It must be something pretty heavy duty to cause the router to restart rather than just drop the connection!
I've now switched to an old 2Wire 2700HG-B so see how that behaves.
Any help appreciated...
> ...but I'll have a look around for an option/command...
After reading the CLI guide I can only find options that would chop the PPP connection and that's not what I'm seeing (i.e. the router is restarting).

I haven't changed any settings on the router since setting it up around a year a go - so nothing should have changed. There was an 'idle timeout' issue with 585's running earlier firmware but not my version. Then the router would just freeze not restart I believe.
The 585 is (normally) a great router but the GUI is pants - anything interesting has to be done with the CLI, but I'll have a look around for an option/command but can't see why it would have changed (especially on two routers)?
Yes the ADSL connection does drop! - the router does a complete restart (so no router logs) so if it does this in the evening (as yesterday) when SNRM is naturally lower I get a lower sync followed by the drop in IP Profile which normally takes 5 days to recover as it's only the one step :¬(
I haven't swapped the power supply at the moment as that's not so convenient to get at, but I will for tomorrow.
Thanks for the reply and keep the ideas coming!
Your connection does look more intermittent than Pete's, so is unlikely to be connected. Do you notice/does the log show that your router looses DSL sync during these drops in connection? If the router is constantly in sync during this time it could further point toward my initial suggestion or another similar setting within the Speedtouch.
Edit: Whoops, forgot to log back into my account after checking out yours!
