Did a course this year and part of it involved good web design and things to avoid.
All I would like is some pointers, advice as to where to start and what to use and what to stay clear off. I've seen some examples of pages that users on here have created and a good few know exactly what they are doing so if they are around I would be grateful for any URL's that show (In your opinion a well designed site)
I'm not to great at designing images/logos etc so I guess I should maybe consider learning how to do that at some point but at the moment the main structure and design is top of the list.
Thanks if you can offer any help/advice or examples.
:-)
I've been putting my basic ideas down and making a start to the design. Need to get some information to give it a bit of content and work out the easiest way to navigate through the site.

Hi,
Ok, then you just really need to concentrate on making the whole thing look pretty. In this case, maybe you should look to see if you can do anything with Flash, Shockwave or something like VRML to make it look nice. I use Fireworks from Macromedia for all my web graphics if its any help.

Try to stay away from CGI if you can, its old technology and most things it can do can be accomplished through server side scripting languages such as ASP or PHP.
Dont confuse the Java based tools. Java, ECMScript(javascript) and JSP are all seperate things and I dont believe there is much open source support for JSP on the internet.
If your site is running on a database then you are looking at two roots, windows, IIS, asp and SQL Sever or Apache, PHP and MySQL. Apache (as you probably already know) is quite good and is highly configurable. I havent worked too much with the latest MS stuff, but it is just as good lately.
For your images all I can suggest is looking into the Adobe or Macromedia products. im not so hot with images either, but I tend to publish only .PNG's, which is supported by PHP.
Can you tell us more about your site?
HTML, DHTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, XSL, Javascript, Flash, PHP, ASP, JSP, CGI, MySQL, PERL, Python, Java, SVG, ODBC...
I can only be more specific when you start being more specific. If you want some examples of good website design, try:

Sorry for being flippant, but if you ask a stupid question..
