Why isn't it possible to create a free roaming game with more freedom than the current games offer?
If you have the game engines ready from previous games, then surely it wouldn't take too long to create some code to join these together. What I mean is that there are thousands of driving games and newer ones are branching out so that you have a choice of routes, almost to the extent of an early adventure game (where you would choose north or south etc)
Put a driving game engine together with a simplified engine for a game like Shenmue or the FF series and add a little more freedom to the map, then add a flight sim engine, internet options like those in PSO, for all the players to work together, mix in a bit of freedom to edit the maps and rules online and you can start to see the future of a new type of game.
You could have races set up between characters or just use the transport to get to places. Hey, you could even get a bus and become a bus driver, earning money for taking people to places while meeting new characters! Play pool with others for cash or meet someone at the virtual pub to plot a new mission, even set up a tavern to give weary travellers rest.
