I originally loaded my site using cuteftp(30day trial). Now the trial period is over I tried to alter my site using Ontrack powerdeskftp which is part of the fix it utilities suite. Using powerdesk I can log onto my site but no folders re available to which I can upload or download for that matter. Is this because I need to use cuteftp always or am I missing something? When logged on using powerdeskftp I can watch it transferring files which it says are complete. It also says I am logged on. can you enlighten me as to what I may be doing wrong?

I had the same problem using CuteFTP, but that was not the cause of the problem. It would seem to me that for some reason the access rights had been changed to 'Read Only'.

I contacted Freeola tech support, and the rights were reset, and now it all works OK.

As far as using a dedicated FTP program, some FTP servers are not accessable via a web browser, or the connection is painfully slow. I suppose it depends on what you want to do. If you're only uploading pages to a website, then you can use IE or Frontpage or whatever, but if you want to access a range of different FTP servers, you really need an FTP client, and the simplest by far that I've found is CuteFTP. I would also recommend CuteMAP and CuteZIP for both amateur and professional web designers - they all make life so much easier.

Someone at work told me just to load the ftp. site name in internet explorer and then when asked to enter login and password just do so. Then open windows explorer and just copy the files accross, hey presto it works just fine. This made me wonder why people would want to buy additional ftp. type software such as cuteftp.?
