I have to say i have regularly used BW for the last couple of years, playing Halflife, TeamFortressClassic and UT. I for one was genuinely devastated to see it go, especially knowing the kind of sacrifices Ted and DB (and several others) made for it, selling houses, ending relationships etc. It was a genuinely stonking service with a strong and international community which i will be sad to see fall apart.
As far as other options go, personally i always play on WirePlay (www.gameplay.com/wireplay) more than i do/did on BW, and of late Jolt (www.jolt.co.uk), a games service provider run by the ISP Nildram is improving rapidly and offers services that BW used to and Wireplay don't, such as rentable clan servers.
i'm from the UK, and europeans may find these GSP's a little slow, but they're what i use, and we do get plenty of foreigners :D
another service you could try is NGI (netgamesitalia or something, not sure of URL) who are, you may have guessed, in Italy, but seems to provide good performance throughout Europe.
