Recommended to my by our dear friend Goatboy (on the promise that if I didn't like it, he'd buy it off me), Near Dark is an 80's vampire film, but without your cheesy vampire cliches like crosses, garlic and so forth. In fact, throughout the entire movie, the 'V' word isn't even mentioned once. It's about a dude named Caleb who picks up a lovely at a gas station, and after a quick bit of tonsil tennis, she bites him and he ends up like her - da da da daaaaa - a vampire.

He then joins up with her motley vampire gang, consisting of Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Bill Paxton (er, Aliens) and Jenette Goldstein (errr, Aliens) plus a little dude called Homer, who's trapped inside a child's body. Needless to say, they get up to lots of crazy vampire adventures which I won't go into now because I can't be arsed, but the bar scene is absolutely fantastic. What struck me about Near Dark was how utterly, utterly quotable it was, and how I didn't remember seeing it the first time round, which I'm sure I have. Most of the lines come from Paxton's character Severn, a slightly unhinged vamp with a thirst for violence.

"Ahma shoot yer pecker off boy!"
"It's finger lickin' good!"

And the best line (from Henriksen):

"The last sound you hear on your way to Hell will be your own guts snapping like bullwhip."

So yeah, Near Dark - a vampire film without being cheesy. Pick it up on DVD or something, I don't know.

Ah you got around to watching it eventually, good stuff.

Excellent film and, as Snuggly says, doesn't use any of the vampire cliches you expect. Paxton rules "Hurts don't it?!" and I dont know why he's not more famous and well paid.
He should be in a Kevin Smith film.
Dirty, dusty and downbeat movie more people should see.
This week's recommended movie is....

Miami Blues

Fred Ward, Alec Baldwin, Jennifer Jason-Leigh.
Baldwin plays a compulsive thief "Junior" who hooks up with stupid prostitute Jason-Leigh.
He beats up cop Fred Ward, steals his badge, gun and false teeth and proceeds to go on a crime-spree.
"A bit like Robin Hood, but I dont give the money to poor folks. That's just ####ing stupid"

Dark humour, visciously nasty and funny. And starts with Baldwin killing a Hari-Krishna at an airport.
Which has got to be a good thing

I saw this years ago, and liked it, I think.

Useless piece of info, the kid who played Homer was in Death Warrant, the movie in which Jean Claude Van Damne goes to jail as an undercover cop.

True.

Excellent film.

Saw it on Channel 4 about 6 years ago, wasn't expecting much and it turned out to be a really dark and entertaining vampire film.
