Last year saw Bernoldi take the second of two pole positions and it certainly is a crucial pole position. Bernoldi's services were not taken up for this year. It was another driver whose services were not retained that qualified alongside Bernoldi. Salo picked up 2nd in qualifying and went on to pick up his only win of the year as Bernoldi developed mechanical gremlins that forced him to pit.
As for the current challengers as they stand, Trulli had a quiet race after starting 8th and finished 9th, which would mean no points under the current points structure. Villeneuve is known to hate it round here and it showed. He qualified 6th and drifted all the way back to 18th. It's Raikkonen that seems to go well round here. He qualified a lowly 14th and scrapped his way to 4th place, which is a great achievement considering how difficult it is to pass. Firman will be hoping to learn the track fast and not get caught out.
As we enter Round 7, let's have a look at how a few drivers did last year and compare it to this year. Frentzen is probably the obvious place to start. At this point last year, Frentzen had a 2 point lead in the Championship and picked up a 2nd place in Monaco. This year, it has been a terrible season with 0 points and not looking like scoring. The Jordan car has improved a lot because they had no points at this stage last year but have picked up 41 this year.
So, it's going to be 78 gruelling laps for both man and machine. If it rains, the winner is going to be the driver that makes no mistakes. Sometime in the next few races, I'll do a complete rundown of how the drivers are doing compared to last year and their average positions for the race and qualifying.
With everything still to play for, who can predict what can happen. Qualifying is super important and getting off that line is going to be dramatic!
If you know of anyone that might want to join, that would help. The only one I can think of off hand is Villeneuve that will probably be available but there is definitely more. As I said, next couple of races.
Why? Simply because this is my favourite circuit. I've mastered this track on Grand Prix 4, and always seem to win now. COME ON JORDON!
No longer bothered as he did me a favour and my placing is higher than it would have been.
So, once again, while I'm here, go Raikkenon!!
* a few regulars don't seem to reply either.
