But Beckham is now injured with a suspected broken thumb.
Just goes to show you that Eriksson ISN'T as 'great' as everyone seems to think! We've only won 3/4 of the 11/12 Friendlies we've played under him!
The only reason we looked 'better' was because of the boost the players got from seeing such a well-know face in-charge, back in the beginning.
The players are getting used to him now, and we'll soon be back in the old Glenn Hoddle days, again.
And if you ask me, judging on last night's performance, I'd say England are better-off WITHOUT David Beckham - just like Man United.
Every-time we got the ball and moved forwards, it ALWAYS went out to the right-hand side, with Beckham ...and Mills. EVERYTHING 'had' to go through Beckham, and that is why Trevor Sinclair and Joe Cole were 'ignored' and given low-ratings during Beckham's time on the pitch.
The same thing seems to happen and Man United - he just demands too-much of the ball, without even calling for it!
And just look at how well we played in that first-half at Highbury - WITHOUT him!
If Beckham's going to play for England, then I think he should be given a more centralised role, from where he can control the game and demand the ball better, with a greater field of vision for him to epxloit his superb passing abillity. He always seem too-restricted out on the right, to me... Jenas could play there, instead. But I'm not sure about Scholes, if if he'd really work that-well with Owen, like he has done with van Nistelrooy.
Fergie spotted Beckham's problem as a bad-influence on the field, and therefore took him out of the games, to give ALL other players the chances they weren't fully getting.
If Eriksson really IS 'that-good' a manager, he should be able to pick-this-up, too...!
Either way, I'm sure we'll be ready for the up-coming Euro 2004 Qualifier against Slovakia, whether we beat Montenegro-and-thingybob, or not. :)
Before the game, I would have expected nothing less than a victory, which we got.
Just don't get your hopes up about "England coming good", because it's times like that when we lose.
Completely forgot England had a match tonight. Still, well done to Southgate.
