Two years on and they have not. UEFA have claimed to try to be stamping out cheating in football. Well watched the UEFA cup final tonight and they are nowhere near making any difference.
Did anyone else watch the final? If you did then you ould have seen Porto's players dives. It was shocking. In extra time when their goalie went to ground, he did a triple somersault, whilst holding the ball and clutching his leg. After receiving treatment he was still clutching his leg. The other one. Derlei. What a cheat. Repeatedly going to ground at the slightest of touches.
Just before Bobo Balde was sent off, Larsson was sycthed down near Porto's box. Nothing. Several seconds later Balde had to make a challenge that resulted in a second yellow. Whilst I do not dispute the card, it simply would not have happened if Celtic had gotten the freekick they deserved for the foul on Larsson.
Not only were they guilty of diving and overhammed acting, but the celebrations were not just OTT, they were bookable. You are not allowed to leave the pitch and running track area. Derlei did after both his goals. You are not allowed to take your shirt off, even if it is 30C. And your manager is not allowed on the pitch. But when one of Porto's actors hit the deck like he had been shot Mourinho did go on the pitch. After Porto's goal in extra time, 6 or 7 players were guilty of wasting time. One got booked. But all 6 or 7 of them were in a heap in Celtic's box.
Quite frankly that is the worst refereeing I have ever seen. I watched the ref walk up to Alan Thompson and indicate that he saw with his own eyes Thompson foul someone. The replay showed...a dive.
Celtic even were wrongly ruled offside on more than one occasion.
That referee was not in control of the match, was not up to scratch and should simply never have another important match again in his career.
I think that video replays have to be introduced, at least at high levels like this, if not at third division level. The technology is there. Use it. The sport has to grow. 30 years ago, you just had to accept human judgement. Not now. 30 years ago you did not get substitutes. These days you are now allowed 3 in the one match, and something like 7 on the bech to choose from. That is an example of the sport growing. Video replays have to be the next thing.
I am not a Celtic fan trying to make excuses for not winning. I am a football fan who simply wants to see a sporting contest between teams of skilled players.
Porto did not win tonight because they were a better team. They won because they were better cheats. My opinion of Porto, their players, their staff and pretty much all of Portugal in general has reached an all time low. Had they won fair and square this would not have been posted.
But I feel that tonight was a bridge too far. Cheating has to stop before it ruins the game forever.

That's because you bought Robbie Savage. :D

From what ive watched their is definately more 'cheating' by the bigger clubs players than their is by their lower divison counterparts... just my opinion and experience.
. That's why I'm a Division Two fan.

Thats very true in my experience of watching lower leauge football i would say that there is noticably less 'cheating'...
I guess that the higher the stakes are the more rife and blatant the diving/cheating becomes, a sad but perhaps true fact.
One of the Porto players dived twice (done somersaults), looked up at the referee, saw he wasn't going to blow up for a foul, and then continued to dive around making out he was injured. Hello...you got tripped up, not bloody taken out with a two footed challenge.
Football is getting worse. I wouldn't go as far as saying it sucks, but boy oh boy, it's nearly there. That's why I'm a Division Two fan. The cheating in Nationwide games is not as bad as that of the top flight football. You still get the bad decisions (like when Brentford beat Wycombe 1-0 by scoring a penalty then shouldn't have had :cP) and all that, but it's not as bad.
