Bearing in mind the fact that this is my first guitar, and my mates (who have guitars) recommended learing on an acoustic as it makes you a better player. (Supposedly)

I would say get an electric. I suppose it depends what sort of music you're into but you're limited as to what you can play on an acoustic.
