As any website designer knows, colour plays an important role in making a website accessible to as many people as possible whilst keeping the pages stylish and attractive. Bright bold colours can have an impact, but may be uncomfortable on the eye.

So, to assist both beginners and website designing veterans alike, here is a guide to refer to when colouring your websites.

Color

First of all, the language of the web was not created in English, but American-English, so we must refer to colour as color.
The code color can be used to edit text, website backgrounds, table borders, and to the experienced web designer, can be used for much more.

Color is defined by a hexidecimal code which represents 3 colors of light. Red, green and blue. The lowest value that can be given to these color sources is 0 (or hex 00) and the highest is 255 (or hex FF) Different combinations of color values will create many different shades of color. Infact there are over 16 million shades of color that can be created with hexidecimal coding.

Here are some examples of some basic colors to try:

Black Hex: #000000
White Hex: #FFFFFF
Red Hex: #FF0000
Green Hex: #00FF00
Blue Hex: #0000FF
Yellow Hex: #FFFF00
Cyan Hex: #00FFFF
Magenta Hex: #FF00FF

Some colors can be achieved by using the color name instead of the hexidecimal code. The officially supported colors are:

aqua
black
blue
fuchsia
gray
green
lime
maroon
navy
olive
purple
red
silver
teal
white
yellow

At the bottom of this page is a list of colors, and their hexidecimal value, that most browsers will support by name alone.

Now here are some basic examples of editable code that can be copied and pasted into Windows Notepad or your website creation software to play around with color. Remember, you can replace the color name with a hexidecimal value as shown in the first example.

Please follow other tutorials on Freeola Web Design for page layout and object placement

Backgrounds
The bgcolor attribute can be included within code to define the background color of a web page or frame or to change the background color of a table.

e.g. <body bgcolor="yellow"> </body>
or in hex': <body bgcolor="#FFFF00"> </body>

or for a table:
<table bgcolor="red"> </table>

Text
Remember, you can edit the style of text using <b> for bold </b> and <i> for italics </i>. The more experienced web developer will likely use stylesheets (css) or similar to reduce time taken for editing individual blocks of text. The basic use of color in fonts can be used in the following way:

<font color="#00FF00"> Would display this text in green </font>

Don't forget to combine the color tag with use of different font sizes, headers, and text within elements such as tables. Play around to create different designs!

Borders
Mostly handy for creating tables, instead of a mediocre layout you can transform your tables with the bordercolor code:

<table border="1" bordercolor="silver"> <table>
or use this in combination with the bgcolor code:
<table border="1" bordercolor="silver" bgcolor="red"> </table>

This has hopefully been of use as a support in creating your web pages. As a reference, please find below a list of color names supported by most browsers:
