I have a mini-ATX nForce 2 chipset, which has onboard sound on it. At the moment, there is a cable connected from the headphone in on the mobo to the headphone socket on the front of the case, but when listening to anything via the socket, the sound is crackly. I'm assuming that this is caused by interference from fans or the board, etc. since connecting a soundcard to the PCI slot and listening through the headphone socket there causes no problems, so how can I get the onboard sound to be crackle-free? Any suggestions would be great.
I don't think EMI is causing this. Have you any pictures of this setup? It could just be a duff port.
That's the thing - there is no headphone socket for the headphones to go into on the motherboard. If you mean the pin connection, that's where the cable is going from to the headphone socket in front.
It's much more likely to be a bad contact somewhere around where the motherboard plugs into the front of the case. Try plugging a pair of headphones directly into the headphone socket on the motherboard.
