While it is not the newest films, i had always heard above average things about this under the radar Jack Black film. Picking it up for £5 (but with vouchers) i thought i would give it a go and see if what i had heard was true.

The game sees good friends Jerry and Mike (Jack Black and Mos Def) live their sheltered lives in a small american town who love an old Jazz star who game from there. Mike works in a VHS rental store, while Jerry is constantly trying to take down the near by power plant to prevent everyone being controlled. As in 95% of his films, Jack Black plays an over the top, excessive and rather annoying character who is self obsessed and doesn't listen to anyone.

On one of his crazy attempts to take out the power plant, Jerry is struck electricity and left magnetized by the charge. With the VHS rental store's shop owner (Danny Glover - Mr Fletcher) going out of town in order to do some research into the modern market for DVD rental in order to keep up with the current trend and prevent his home from being destroyed. Mike has been given the message to not let Jerry in the store, but Mike gives in once he sees Jerry stumble to the shop and chuck up outside the front door.

Once Jerry is in the store he is soon enough touching the films and moving them about - this then leads to him erasing all the film in the store. When people come in for rentals, the two friends have to think fast and decide to re-film all the old favourites that we all know and love. Up until this point in the film not too much comedy actually makes it way into the film. I found it to be very slow starting and was getting rather bored if i am honest. When the films begin to get remade, some funny bits pop up and the remake of Ghostbusters probably being the best is short lived and the story is soon back to being more of a serious nature - revolving around the store needing money or else it will be destroyed.

The film carries on showing the mis-match duo remaking some classic films and trying to get the money. I won't go any further so i dont ruin anything, but i have to say it was disappointing to not have more emphasis on the remaking of the films and showing more scenes with better comedy aspects. Jack Black was more of a annoying, weird nerd. Not a funny person who has some great one liners.

This all said i did find a few funny moments and the films was watchable even if not the comedy i was expecting. It was by no means a must see of even one i would recommend spending money on to rent, if you happen to see it on TV and have some spare time, then it would be worth seeing and giving your own thoughts on the film.

Well all the pros and cons have really been stated and it is obvious that it was a bit of a bad buy on my behalf and i am glad i didnt actually spend any money, think it will be going back to get traded if i can get a couple of quid back on it.

So an overall, disappointing film from an actor i normally enjoy and find to be a funny and more than watchable actor with interesting plots and quirky lines and concepts.
I have no choice but to give this film a 5/10

Thanks for reading, hope this review helps anyone thinking about watching it. Would be interested to see all of your thoughts on this film if you have seen it!
