OK, today is my first written AS examination and it's General Studies-Social Aspects.

Personally, I not only strongly hate the AS-A2 system but the fact I have been made to take this further subject on top of the other four i took making the extra overload a bad idea. In my school if we don't go the lessons for this subject we ger 'oiked' out!

Anyway, The teachers don't know the subject well enough and don't know what there teaching. They missed out the entire subject of politics for my group and tried to make it up in 1 lesson. This lesson I was'nt present as I was being made to sing in my spanish Oral (different story)

...SO...If there are any kind hearted souls who know anything about this subject or are willing to outline basic facts about politics please :D

You mean you're supposed to have lessons on General Studies? All we ever did in that lesson was learn about "the perfect paragraph" and other crap. I ignored it all and got two A's. I don't think I did as well in yesterday's exam though.

Not a bad idea now that you mention it... resulting and constructive trusts always seems to come up and I'm sure the lecturers don't understand it either :^)

Got to get a move on with the revision though.

Ooooh, I sympathise! Can you not just do what I did and harp on about Lord Denning for 20 pages, or have they cracked down on that sort of thing?

The college probably take the attitude that if they're going to have to put the lessons on, everyone else is damn well going to have to bother with the subject too.

However, in the real world, it's not exactly... well, people don't treat it as a full a-level. You could probably just never mention it again and be just fine. However, do well and it's a nice, if minor, extra thing for employees etc to consider.

Politics:

Left and right wing beliefs:

Left - favours human rights to state powers, financial equality (tax rich more, more state-aid to the poor).

Right - Favours state powers (as opposed to human rights) more, ability for rich to make money above financial equality.

It goes a little deeper than that, but that'll be enough for the exam.

Israel - Palestine:

The Palestinians have been displaced from their state by Israel, and generally treated badly. Palestinians attack Israel, usually individuals suicide missions, Israel's military attack Palestinians.

Causes of the conflict:
Palestinians have no state, Israel don't want to give up the land to give them one.
Land occupied by Israel includes lands of religious significance to both peoples, so both want it.
'Cycle of violence' - both sides kill each other in revenge for past incidents.

Again, it goes deeper, but that should get you through.

Roadmap to Peace - suggests a system to create a Palestinian state.
A nice point to pick up some marks could be to suggest a federal system instead, which could share holy grounds and create a feeling of unity between the peoples (ending the cycle of violence).

The Euro:

For joining:
Brings us into closer relationship with rest of the EU.
Promotes trade between states using the Euro (most of the European Union), as it's all in the same currency.

Against joining:
People like having the pound, 'part of heritage' blah.
Ties performance of our economy to Europe. When two economies differ you see exchange rates vary to accomodate it. With one currency you can't do that, which can make things a bit of a mess.

Generally:

Try to show an understanding of the issues and give your own opinions.
And remember it's not that important.

Good luck.
