I'm really interested to know what you guys would say the best web site content management software is. (CMS)

Ive tried many different alternatives from Joomla, Wordpress and SilverStripe, however I wonder what else is out there.

I still personally theme Wordpress.

What do you guys use? Also if possible give an example.

I can't help very much as I don't use a CMS, but I'll also be interested in peoples replies as it is something I'm often asked.

This wiki page might be a useful reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_content_management_systems

We are passing over control of a site we currently maintain to new users and its been suggested they use

http://www.cushycms.com/

I had a look and unless you go Pro at $28 PM you get silly adverts
I think Joomla is the most popular choice but I dont use CMS either

I had a look at CushyCMS and decided to run away when they asked for my website address plus full ftp login details on line.

They may be a perfectly legitimate and responsible site but I was still too scared to give those details out.

Does that seem like a reasonable reaction or is this dog being a scaredy cat?

Sounds like you did the right thing to me!

I have never heard of them - but I see in their 'terms' it basically says 'tough' if your account details are stolen.

Also I guess unless your Freeola site is using 'web freedom' the FTP access will be denied anyway.

I don't blame you, but when I came to set Joomla! up recently, it also asks for your FTP details. Now many people use Joomla! so i'm certain its not a security risk providing these details. If it was another CMS that wasn't too popular then I would probably think twice.

According to the Joomla! documentation, this is used to create files and folder, apparently increasing the security of the server...

As long as you are entering your FTP details when installing, and it's on YOUR server too, then it should be perfectly safe to do so - especially with well-known systems such as Joomla! at least.

CMS's need your FTP details to be able to install, just don't install any that you don't trust. Generally, the most popular tend to be the best anyway.
