For a few days now the sound of the HardDrive (i assume) on my Laptop, has become increasingly worrying. When loading things it begins to whir, and with quite a lot of noise. Whilst making this noise, nothing loads, and it does not load until it stops. When booting, it advises me to run scan disc and some sector/cluster/surface scanner. But it takes ages to do so because of the problem. I have done nothing abnormal to cause this problem, and i know that there are no viruses. Could the Hard-drive just be deteriorating? Has anyone got any ideas. Thanks in advance!

You could easily get a replacement from the laptop manufacturer if you ask them. Just make sure you backup anything important if it needs replacing.

That sounds bad.
How long have you had it?

Something for the future to keep ur Hard disk healthy:
Neva turn off and on.
It's fine to leave it on even if you go out for a few hours.
Only Defrag ONCE a month.
Scandisk now and again.

Its alright now (i hope!!) The hard drive isnt making any obvious noises and seems to be running slightly better. It still asks me to run the disk surface scanner, but i should be able to do that now. I have still backed up some of the files.

As for the make of my laptop, i am really unsure. The only marking on it is a plate that says " Notebook ". I will be back later with a bit more info, so hopefully someone can help me with that!!

Sounds like it's deteriorating to me, trouble is, once they start to go it's the slippery slope to a new hard drive.

How old is the laptop? If it's still within your warranty period I'd take it back and ask for a new one. Depending on the maker of the HD you may find that you've got a longer warranty than say a year. Always worth checking this out.

Would suggest you start backing up any important documents and data you've got when you do get it up and running as soon as.....just to be on the safe side.
