The Austrian Grand Prix has seen better times. The track is described as 'Mickey Mouse' by some of the drivers but it does have the ability to shock. The track, it's fair to say, is a shadow of the famous Austrian race of years ago.

Qualifying for this race last year saw the now defunct Arrows take a 1-2 with Bernoldi on pole and Frentzen second. It was a very prosperous year for Arrows, with Frentzen taking the Championship to the last race and what was almost literally the last corner. Bernoldi scored a fair few points and looked more than a match for Frentzen at times. Unfortunately, Bernoldi couldn't secure a drive for this year. Maybe next year.

The Championship contenders in qualifying last year did okay. Trulli did the best of the lot with 3rd place on the grid. Raikkonen managed 11th and Firman will have a bit of track learning to do, as this is his first visit to Austria.

The race was totally different to qualifying. The qualifying was really dry and the race was rain soaked and heavy rain was set for the entire race. It was Frentzen last year that took the win and he really needs another one here to get some kind of challenge going. Frentzen was pushed all the way by Villeneuve and Bernoldi but held them off. It was Frentzen's second and last win of the year when his challenge faded in the second half of the year.

The race last year was a disaster for Webber. He only managed one lap time during the hour because of a transmission problem and the same gremlin caught him during the race. The contenders for the Championship both retired with punctures.

Who knows what is going to happen. Panis needs a result if he has any chance of retaining the World Championship and Frentzen and Barrichello will want to get off the mark. Trulli will want to keep the chasing pack behind him and the chasing pack will want to cut the gap. With everyone still in the title picture, anything can happen in Round 6 of the SR F1 Championship!

Qualifying: 1m09.479s Bernoldi

Time for Panis to make an impact, and this could be the race where it all begins.

Come on Panis!!!

I am at an advantage! Button has a lap record here! Ha! Actually, that hasn't got much to do with it. Smeg.
