Every PlayStation 2 fan has heard of Squares 3D, free roaming beat'em-up. Initially it looked that Square was going to do for the scrolling beat 'em-up genre what id and Doom did for the FPS so many years ago. The question is; have they? Taking a look at screen shots and the like it appears that the answer is a resounding 'Yes!', there is no doubt that this game looks fantastic. However, even here cracks begin to appear. We were promised fully inyeractive, 3D backgrounds, and while this is true - to some extent, Square have fixed the camera angles so that it all looks pre-rendered. Now we get to the meat of it by saying that in all truth the Bouncer isn't very good. In fact it's pretty poor. The Bouncers real let down is the gameplay. Firstly by the simple lack of it. The extensive FMV sequences seem to be longer than the action segments. This is not helped by the fact that it is very easy and little or no tactics or skill are needed. Only button-bashers need apply for this one. What's worse is that it will only take an hour or so to complete and you'll feel as though you've spent most of that time watching the, admittedly excellent, FMV sequences. The plot is waifer thin, and coming from the people who have make some of the most wonderful and involving storylines ever to grace and games console ever, this is unforgivable. So even though the Bouncer has three playable characters, a variaty of modes such as versus and survival, plenty of unlockable characters, different routes and endings, these do not save it from the fact that the essence of this game is far from what we expected. The Bouncer is simply a game which showed so much promise and yet is let down by the most fundamental aspect of any game- playability. There is a chance that Square could rectify this, as they have attempted to do with Driving Emotion Type-S before it's UK release, but with faults so essential this appearto be an unsummountable task and one which will probably not be undertaken.
