Right.

XP's at it again.
It's a mates PC, and when you boot up, this appears;

WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM
The file is corrupt or missing
Press 'r' on the first screen to repair

OK, I know what all this means.
I've got the XP disk in, boot up from disk, hit R for repair, logon to D:WINDOWS (The drive XP is on), but it asks for commands to be entered.

How do you fix it?
Pretty damn urgent - whoever helps will be regarded as a life saver.
Almost.
Cheers.

Ah yeah, I see what your saying now.

Yeah, with the three options on the menu when you're booting from CD.
Aha, hang on.

Yes, thats what I forgot to say. Doing it like that will not ask for any commands, and will simply re-write all the windows files, while all documents, downloaded files etc. will remain intact.

You don't have to format to re-install Windows.

It's imperitive no data is lost.
I'd format the drive, and install from scratch if it wasn't.

Follow the usual method of installing XP, as if you're doing it from scratch, then when you see "hit R to repair" for the second time, choose that. It should be on the screen asking you to choose which drive to install Windows on.

The text will be something like "Press return to continue, or R to repair a previously installed version of windows" with a box below with the drives of the PC.

I've done it before, but it's a little hard to explain properly in text.

Hope this helps anyway.

Hmmm, the '\' didn't appear.

I'll try again.

WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

If that dont work,

WINDOWS \ SYSTEM32 \ CONFIG \ SYSTEM

There.
