Well, I suppose do good is the wrong thing to say but look at Nintendo and their N64, It is a great console, very few faults with the games. Yet because they took time to make such a good console they were beaten to the first released spot by Sony and by the time of release the N64 was already way behind the sales figures of the PSX.
Now as the PS2 is already out I think that by the time the MXB and the NGC come out the problems will be fixed and the console wil be cheap but having said that the poor start may have scared the PS2 for life, I don't think it will ever have the originality of the PSX or the spark of the N64.
I would say that Games-wise the PS2 has done 'okay' I know there are not many games but think about it the games they have seem to be making the gamers happy. I wouldn't know what to do with the PS2 now, I mean if I were Mr. Playstation I would be in quite a muddle!
I think Sony can do well enough as long as they lower the price, people are buying Dreamcasts for the 'sheer hell of it' because the console is such good value.
