Looking at the current crop of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD releases, you have to wonder why anyone would bother buying either machine at the moment. Yes, the picture and sound quality are better, but just how sharp can you get them and still notice a difference?

The discs have no more extras than their DVD counterparts and they cost more, while a lot of them are old titles now on budget release on DVD. It's not like the upgrade from VHS to DVD where you really did notice the difference in picture and the sound moved from stereo or mono to dolby digital.

Maybe in time, given the higher capacity of both formats, there will be a chance for more extras such as new commentaries and a greater number of other features, but until I see evidence of this, I think that I, along with many others, will hold on to my DVD collection a bit longer...

Ive just read in the papaer that the new Samsung Blue Ray player is £999. Thats just rediculous. It does however make the PS3 look considerably better value for money than I once thought it was.

Its also going to make a mess of Box sets. They'll just pile everything on one disk and it wont feel the same when you buy it.

Both formats have come far too soon. A result of technology going too fast for itself.

I'll be holding off both formats until there's a valid reason to upgrade. I may even hold off buying the HD-DVD addon for the 360 as, like you say, the current releases are old movies you could get on a 3-for-a-tenner deal in the shops on regular DVD.

Also, you need to buy a new tv in order to view them. Thats nearly a grands worth of stuff when you combine the price of the tv with the player. I dont have a problem with the quality of current DVD's. They have a nice clear image and excellent sound. Id rather spend £1000 on a library of DVD's.

Edit:- And the other problem is which to choose. BR or HD? One is inevitably going to loose the battle meaning you will have essentially wasted hundreds of pounds if you back the wrong one.
