Trying to remember exactly what it was....

A Dell with:
2.53 GHz Pentium 4
256 RAM
60Gig HD
64MB Graphics card
Flat Screen monitor

For £899?

Given that my PC is currently a 233Mhz Cyrix, it'd be a vast improvement, but is that a reasonable price? I can buy it over 3 years with no interest, and I pay slightly less tax for that period, as it comes out of my salary...

Well, Meka, same as me, Cyrix 233Mhz :o)

You know, if you want it for top end games then you want a better system. But if you just want to get rid of that stupid Cyrix then anything past 1GHZ is more than enough.

233 Cyrix does the job.

And I can play Rainbow 6 online with no lag!

I think the most important part of this PC is that it comes with 3 years credit. It doesn't matter how good the PC is if it's the only one you can afford, and that PC is fine for everyday running..

..it just won't set the world on fire.

I think Dell pc's are brilliant as long as you don't get a really cheap cut down version like a celeron with onboard sound and video then you will have good expandibility.
People are bound to tell you to make your own and all that shish but normally thats just a "look how cheap i can get stuff for" type of remark, you could build one for cheaper but buy this and you will have warrantys and all, also these are pretty nice looking black cases.

It's with Dell so it will be slightly more expensive but you're paying for quality.

HP PCs are crap from what I've heard, they're just PC World stuff.

Dell are good, I've had no problems with them with my PC.

Hm if you have Broadband you wont need a 56k modem...
And if you can get a mobo with onboard lan nowadays they eliminate the need for lan cards and it saves you some money.

But it does have a broadband modem, and they're not cheap (although if you don't have ADSL you might wonder why you shelled out for it), and it will knock your socks off if you're used to a Cyrix 233. If you don't have the raw cash, and this is the best way you can get your hands on a new computer for ch33p then by all means go for it - millions of people buy machines like these. If you had the cash upfront you'd have got something better, particularly if you'd have been willing to build it yourself, but I'm nitpicking because I build my own machines :O) In the same way as I'd settle for a pre-built Volkswagon because I don't have the expertise to build my own custom sportscar, you can settle for that.
