Last night, me and Mrs Dragonlance attended an Engagement party in our local town. We parked in a multi-storey car park close to the venue. The car park advertised 50p after 6pm on Saturdays. We arrived at 7pm and left at 10.30pm - not being 'night clubers' and Mrs Dragonlance was at work the next day. The automated ticket machine obviously hadn't been given the Saturday evening arrangements and insisted on charging us £3.70 to leave. Not having a crowbar or similar appliance to hand, we paid and left vowing to follow this up the next day, as did other users.
However, on investigating the ticket, I discovered that the charge included VAT! How can you be charged VAT on parking?
This leads to the next pondering - VAT stands for Value Added Tax - so where or what is the Value??? The dictionary definition is even more confusing in this scenario.....
tax on amount by which the value of an article is increased by each stage in its production
Right??? Since when was 'parking' an article - is this another stealth tax.....over to you:-)
However I am very sorry to hear of your present demise and would like to wish you all the very best in now facing life with diabetes - have one or two friends and they do seem to have their ups and downs as a result, but thankfully they do also see the funny side of life.

I got it. Made me chuckle :p I enjoy reading your posts actually, very dark sense of humour!

Dear me - makes my facebook status the other day seem pretty trivial! All the best!
Therefore, if I've done my very rough maths correctly, the VAT on 50p would take the price to 57p.
I reccomend maybe checking further on the HMRC website, but it does sound like you're being ripped off and should take it further...
(Unless I'm missing the point and you mean the higher price includes VAT - in which case there is a value to parking - after all, if someone parked on your property you'd either want the vehicle moved or a fee to be paid...unless you knew the person :P)

Erm, it was a thinly veiled porn joke, not a personal attack but if the joke was a bit too high brow for you than I will try to lower the tone [=
Yeah I've been dealt a sweet hand, last week my house got burgled and my doctor told me yesterday that I have diabetes =]
There have been quite a lot of crashes in that area, most likely due to these annoying impatient drivers.
If they're just doing it because they're being annoying or can't see over the steering wheel then they need to stop driving. 2 seconds gap please!

Not claimed yet, office closed till Monday. But you've got the idea. I hate drivers that drive behind you with their main beam on and I know they know they have - especially on the mway. I don't drive slow, but I have the responsibility of delivering people safely to their destination, wherever it may be.
Sounds like a tough break there DL, doesn't make sense as parking isn't a stage in production. If they did charge it to you, I hope it was t the lower rate! Have you tried to claim your overexpenditure back yet?

Many things have passed through my mind since CA's post and I still believe that he has read it the wrong way....we all have something to 'moan' about.
It is usually something that others or authority dismiss, because they are 'higher beings above such problems' (like CA?) and don't have problems' like blocked sewers or whatever', life has just dealt them a good hand (at the moment).
But other mortals do and this is the thread where you can expunge your vent, so to speak....many of you forumites are young, just starting out, your life is in front of you, your direction clear; others are older, married or with partners and have experienced life's little upsets and have changed their direction as a result, some are at the end of their 'time' and here to give their 'bit'...not to upset or to dictate but to try and participate in a forum.

And so are we, it is just an - let's call it - opportunity to share the somewhat illogical vaguaries of daily life.....such as why does this unknown cat always decide to use our driveway for its dumping ground? You know - illogical or (dare I say) unfair? Just light-hearted Sunday morning/afternoon fun:-)
