I don't know why, but I'm considering getting a domain name, and to be frank I'm not exactly clear on what it's all about. At the moment, my brain is thinking over the following points:

1) Domain names - when these are bought and the site is hosted somewhere else, how can an actual site from the domain URL be viewed? For example, if the domain name "a.com" was bought, but was hosted at "ntlworld.com", how could the actual "a.com" be viewed, seeing as it is hosted somehwere else but the URL points to that address?

2) Following on from above, as the person is just buying the domain name, what if another person/company wanted their site to be hosted at the actual "a.com" location - what will happen then, seeing as the domainname is owned by someone else?

3) If I want to buy a domain now from getdotted.com, is it just the name I am buying, or also the hosting at that domain name?

Forgive me if my points sound naive, but I need to learn here. Thanks

Simple, because their system won't allow it :)

Freeola make money from either monthly ADSL fee's or users dialing up via their number as they get a cut of the call. So, as you can understand, they won't want to let you get the service for free.

If you have built-in Uni ADSL, then I'd suggest looking elsewhere for a host, as Freeola isn't really the best suited for you.

I use bargainhost.co.uk which let you FTP and get E-mail from anywhere, for £50 a year or something. Just look around on the net for some good prices.

Freeola have been the most reliable host for me to date, but in your situation, aren't the best.

Yipee, my messy brain is learning something today.

I'm not sure how I'll go about accessing the site/domain/whatever that I buy - the reason is that I'm moving away from home to uni later this year, and want to use the faster broadband connection that it provides - but I don't see how not using the freeola ADSL service can prevent me from accessing my email addresses for the domain.

Yep.

Every Web Site has to be hosted somewhere to be on the Internet ... its just most Web Sites are on Servers owned by proper companies, who maintain them.

You just get a bit of their Hard Drive to store your site on.

Thanks for that cjh. Oh wait, I get it now. So every website on the internet is hosted by a server which has no resemblance to the company/person, except for the sites which have their own servers (like ntlworld), right?

Basically, the hosting company does all the hard work for you (hopefully).

Even though Freeola Host your Address on their Servers, they have set up what is known as a 'Virtual Host', which will be your section on their servers.

Its like your computer being a host, and a virtual server being each folder on your C: Drive

Freeola (like all hosts) let you have control of your Virtual Server, by letting you put files (Web Pages, images etc) in that folder, and whenever someone enters your Domain Name, they will be taken to the Freeola Servers, and there, the system will know which folder (Virtual Server) to look for to get your site.

Its stuff you don't reall need to know.

As for E-mail, Freeola let you set up [email protected], and give you a connection address to allow you to connect to their systems and send/get E-mail sent to your Domain.

Does any of that make sence?

Oh, just read the guide. So it's hosted at freeola.com - so when someone types the address, will it be redirected towards freeola.com, and will the proper address be in the address bar, or the domain name that was actually typed in?

Also, how does the email addresses work, seeing as the site name is directed back to somewhere else? For example, if I bought google.com, but the proper site host was [email protected], surely the emails also have to be a this address? Aw, I'm confused.
