Hi,
I've managed to lay my hands on an Intel 900mhz P4 CPU from somewhere.

Anyone know if it should work on a motherboard in place of an Intel 400mhz Cerelon CPU?

Would it be a straight swap or would it need a new motherboard? My knowledge of all this is somewhat limited.

The older celeron 400 flip chip (or socket) celerons had a differant Pin out on the chips which changed at about 500mhz mark so this is probably why the 900mhz cpu did not work, if infact the 900mhz cpu is a Slot cpu then it should have worked but may not be running at 900mhz which a bios update would have fixed, Turbo if your 550 is a slot or socket then this chip should work as lone as it is not faulty, if the 900mhz chip is a socket chip you can buy a slotket (socket to slot adapter) which will work fine.

Yeah I think you need a new mobo to be honest.

However, if someone could answer this:

I have a 550mhz PIII in a motherboard, with this take ajh's 900mhz? If so I'll buy it off you :)

Yep, youre right. it didnt sound right at the time. its a P3.

Just performed open heart surgury on my old PC and its not looking too good. you switch the power on, the fans kick in for a couple of seconds and then it all goes quiet. dead.

Just put the old CPU back in and all is well. So no permanent damage.

Perhaps i'll ebay them (aquired a couple of them).

Indeed, if memory serves the slowest P4's were about 1.4Ghz

A 400MHz celeron will be either Socket 370 or Slot 1.

And any P4 will be either Socket 423 or Socket 478, but I'm not sure 900MHz P4s exist, are you sure it isn't a P3?

I know bother Chips use the SOCKET 478, but whether your Motherboard supports the newer chip, I wouldn't be so sure.

Best to contact the people who made your board before switching them.

I strongly suspect you'd need a new motherboard. I'm not sure if P4's and celerons are the same format (I think they are, but not sure), but even if they were, that's a hefty speed increase which I doubt your motherboard could take. You'd be best off looking in your motherboard manual.
