ii) A Beautiful Mind is so far from a "top notch film" I'm amazed they can fit into the same sentence. It has to be the dullest film a Best Picture Oscar has gone to in a LONG time.
iii) You are making the classic mistake of assuming Oscars are given out on merit.

It does when the film is purely biographical. A biographical film can not be top notch with out the lead being so.
Of course Washington got the Oscar for being black - he was okay, but 2002 was a huge "look, we're not racist anymore" year for the Academy. Sidney Poitier was ignored for years, some say this was because he was only ever average, some say it was because he was black. In 2002 this was made up for with the Life Time Achievemant award. At the same time Denzel and Halle Berry get nods, there was no conisidence. Halle Berry was fourth choice really; Nicole Kidman, Judy Dench and Sissy Spacek would all get it before her in my book. Denzel won in a very poor year (out of the five Crowe was probably the worst, yes, even worse than Will Smith).
Anyway, Training Day. Half a good film, then it all goes a bit silly.
