Yes, Reeves will play Spike in the western influenced Anime, which may or may not work, but to me it's an odd choice.
We shall wait and see if Reeves is any good and if the film captures any of the strange mix of east and west that the Anime did so well.

whilst this is old news, being an anime fan and a HUGE fan of cowboy Bebop, i feel i need to say something.
Yes whilst the actors shares some resemblance to spike spiegel, he hasn't got the attitude or personality to be him and thus it will not do the film justice.
Also i can also say that hollywood and their years of experience of butchering movies, will butcher this one. Rarely do hollywood follow the source material at all and a good case in point would be video game based movies, starship troopers (nothing like the book!) and other anime. Speed racer, i mean What The Fudge Right?
Oh hollywood, if you pull this one off you will be loved and do a great service to convince some people to watch the anime and change a few opinions of people who think anime is nothing but DBZ, Naruto, Gundam, urotsukidoj or emo culture.
But knowing you, you'll mess it up, butcher it and wonder why it was rubbish. WHY CAN'T YOU STAY FAITHFUL OR USE THE SOURCE MATERIAL PROPERLY YOU BUNCH OF FRANCHISERCIDE MONSTERS!?
Incidently if you haven't seen cowboy bebop before its really really good. Jazz music is awesome. Hell i have a few of the sound tracks on my playlist in Imeem:

Perhaps its one of the few cartoons thats left me stunned or surprised at the end of the series. It actually ends in a very bitter sweet ending where everyone that didn't leave the penultimate episode suffers one way or another and lives are ruined.
Cowboy bebop deserves the critcal acclaim, but frankly i smell a cynical attempt to cash in on the anime.
