Hot off the Sega of Japan presses, here's a whole slew of new DC games that are bound to pick you up after those January blues.
You already know that Daytona 2001, Fighting Vipers, Phantasy Star Online and Sonic Shuffle are on their way in the near future, followed by Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 2, 18 Wheeler and a New York-based Crazy Taxi 2 sometime before the summer, but beyond this date, things have been a bit of a mystery. Well, toss that confusion in the refuse sack, because here's a rundown of what your hungry DC disc flap can expect before 2002 rolls round!
First up in July-September there's Outrigger, which is described as a 3D action network game that allows multiple players to run around shooting each other (details are scant, alas), closely followed by Black and White, Lionhead's lovingly delayed strategy 'God' game, plus the provisionally titled 'Propeller Head', which is an online arcade dogfighter that promises to bring the much-needed Sega touch to the usually stuffy flight sim genre. The press release describes it as being "Crazy American" in nature - let's hope that doesn't mean one stage involves you shooting your work colleagues in a disgruntled blood bath... After that it's ambitious and atmospheric 3D roaming and driving with Headhunter (see the separate story in News for more details).
Biggest news comes for the pre-Christmas run-up with the return of some big-hitting current favourites. The spunky and sassy tangerine-clad bopping reporter Ulala is back for more hip-swaying action in the follow up to Space Channel 5 (Space Channel 6?); the horribly playable Virtua Tennis gets a well-welcome sequel (replete with girl players, huzzah!); and merciless zombie massacre gun game House of the Dead notches up its third pus-soaked instalment. But that's not all; sweet Jesus, no. The reputedly photo-realistic Virtua Golf swings its niblick in our direction come winter, ably aided by footy title "Action Soccer 2" (again a temporary name). Lastly there's the enigmatic "K-Project", which was conceived a "long, long" time ago by Space Channel 5 and Sega Rally creator Tetsuya Mitzuguchi, which is a shooting game that apparently creates a "Trans experience" through the synergy of its music and graphics. Hmm, fascinating....
On top of all this there are some other super top secret games that we know about but can't reveal at this point, so ner-ner. To sum up, you're gonna see some fresh new stuff that's unlike anything you'll have experienced up 'til now, combined with the new and improved return of some of Sega's best ever games. Not too shabby, we hope you'll agree.
We've waited. We've speculated. Hell, we've even posted up old shots which may (or may not) be from Shenmue II. Suzuki, man, can't you see we're gagging for something... anything? Well the big S has heard our prayers. At a recent press event in Tokyo for the opening of the animated movie, Yu Suzuki surprised the audience with a brief preview of the game and a few sacred screenshots.
The game, we 're informed, will indeed come on the speculated four, packed GDROMs and is to have four distinct locations to explore: Hong Kong, a rural Chinese village, Kuei Forest and Kyuryujou, the Catle Of Nine Dragons.
The presentation was brief, but Suzuki did have time to inform the crowd that so far sales of the original Shenmue have exceed one million units. Not bad for Ryo's first outing.
go to www.dreamcastmagazine.co.uk to see such screemnshots - WOW is the operative word, but will S2 make it to Dreamcast - yup I think so.
