i have a small flat file forum on my website (perl not php) and have recently had two registrations which i believe are spam bots, i have a confirmation email which goes out to new users where they have to click a link to confirm the email address so both these 'members' are still awaiting authorisation.

i am going to delete the members but does anyone recommend any other actions or should i be safe as the bots are not set up to authorise themselves through the emails

thanks

I have added an extra question into the registration which seems to be doing the job now, no spammers for a whole week

Some forums now seem to generate some random questions that you need to answer in order to sign up... such as 'what is the background colour of this website?' etc.

I would also search the internet for additional spam filter plug-ins for your forum software.

To be honest, if they aren't able to fully register to your web site, then your already doing a fairly good job at keeping them away.

I personally think the Captcha method is the best way of keeping unwanted registrations away.

Anybody else got any ideas?

my board does come with a captcha system (type in the text in the picture type thing) but it needs php and i do not have that on my website so i meant i will have to set something up manually on the registration

after about 5 attempts i seem to have been left alone for a while now but i am sure they will be back

That's the type of thing I meant when I mentioned adding some sort of CAPTCHA... :¬)

thanks - so far nothing seems to be getting past the authorisation part but i have just had a third one now, wonder if this is going to become a real pain or it will give up after a while

If you've deleted the users then it looks like you should be fine.
It's hard to say without knowing or being familiar with your forum s/w.

I would keep monitoring things as you already seem to be.

For the future perhaps you could look at introducing some sort of CAPTCHA system for the sign up process?
