Man told he was too fat to adopt.

Obviously there are some issues about bringing up a child in a heathy way if you yourself aren't healthy, but do you think Leeds City Council were right to refuse an adoption request on the grounds of obesity?

Personally I think purely on obesity and age (37) there is a risk he could be ill from his current weight and there is an issue of providing the child with a family whose lifestyle issues might affect their health, but from the article it sounds as if they haven't looked very closely in to the cause for his obesity.

I agree with this idea in theory. If the health of the would-be parents is in question then i do think it's grounds for a refusal. There then obviously has to be clearly defined guidelines on what constitutes healthy. Now the problem i have here is that what they're using to define health is fatally flawed BS. BMI is such a load of crap and a 1-size fits all approach to weight issues. Regardless the guy is only just over that limit so someone should tell him to drop the burgers and eat a salad once in a while, doesn't seem like a massive sacrifice now does it?
In this case I'm not convinced how relevant his weight is when his wife clearly has no such issues. Depends who would be the primary carer.

What about the embarassment factor?
The psychological ramifications of having a fatty for a parent?

Thats a bit harsh, especially in todays way of life when I think you'll find that the majority of people are classed as obese. The perfect weight is b*llocks quite frankly as I've known people who are at their perfect/ideal weight and they look ill and gaunt.

I had this discussion with someone not long ago. I wanted to work out what my ideal weight range supposedly was according to this BMI nonsense. I'm 5'8, 12'8, pretty well built and my ideal weight was judged to be between 8 stone 8lb (haha) or 10 stone 5lb. The only way you're getting me down to 10'5 is if you chop my leg off.
