I know this topic belongs in the reviews section, but what the heck! Today I'll review... Armoured Core II, which I played 'round a friends.
ARMOURED CORE II
Let's cut to the chase: You play the part of a lone pilot nessled safely in the cockpit of an AC mech, where you accept the mission of protecting the transfer of mankind to Mars. 'So-what?' I hear you think, 'so your going to walk around on some orangy-red coloured soil and blast stuff every-so-often.' Nope. You've got Earth organisations (attempting to grab some land on the red-planet) against you, killing your friends and invading your colonies but most importantly: they've got their crosshair aimed at YOU. You just won't know what will hapen next, you could be sent on a mission to protect a convoy of craters, then issued to blow everything you see. You are going to need all of your tactical skills and your (hilariously big) guns to keep yourself fully operational. If you liked Incoming, Descent or even Tomb-Raider style of play, then this game is a must for you. All of you that enjoyed Brian De Palmar's 'Mission to Mars' are in for a treat...
The graphics are amazing. Know how annoying some good games are when they flicker a lot? AC II has been designed never to flicker, even when you are looking side-on at a fence of wire mesh. Fog and snow are worth mentioning too because they are so-damn realistic when you are playing, the weather-effects will make you think 'This must be real snow... they must have filmed REAL snow...' but thanks to the emotion engine it's not, so take your coats off guys. Sound, ahh now some games lack really good sound. Not this one, the PS2 voice card will be pushed to the limit when you hear that great music score and those cool voices blasting through your hi-fi.
Overall: With groin-grabbingly superb graphics and gameplay to match, the super-akward controls pull it back from being the best game for the PS2, though it's worth being in the top 10.
It's not a bad review, though!
