I'm pretty sure I've asked this before, but why isn't there some kind of irc server for this community? MSN chat blatantly sucks, I don't want to have bleating kids interrupting me all the time so I don't give out my messenger address. An irc server would sidestep the need for MSN messenger and diversify the level and nature of communication within this community. Those who want to chat in public can, those who don't can either idle or just not join, and those who want to form private communities can do that too. The bandwidth and hosting costs would be negligible compared to the forum and it will have a positive effect on bringing this community together.

So what do the powers that be say?

IRC rocks, but the SR community probably doesn't have the critical mass to make it work.

IRC sucks.

Face it.

MSN is crap, but we have no real alternative, so we are forced into it. Yeah.

Heh, this accounts for about 90% of the problems I anticipated, but I never accounted for people thinking the pace of chat going too fast:

Heh, this has come up 3 or 4 times now. I used to be an admin on a network, and we were in discussions with Tony for a while about an SR IRC channel. The forums were divided over it, so we tried it out for a little while to see how it went. Various problems occured with it, because it had to be accessable through a browser for people who didn't want to download a standalone IRC client (Silly Mac-type people couldn't get the applet working, the normal CGI alternative was being redesigned at the time), and it was often very quiet - never had more than about 7 users, most of whom didn't like the pace conversation in there went at, and only about 3 were there regularly.

I'm glad it didn't work really, looking back on it, because either it or the forums would begin to suffer. A lot of forum users like to be able to think about and consider their responses, and while I personally love IRC, I can see that it wouldn't be to everyone's tastes. Also, the channel would need more users for it to become successful - bringing these forums in to one large channel would have fanboys from every console arguing or talking about different things. Splitting in to both "official" channels based on these forums and user created random rooms would create an unequal distribution of people, so some would get fed up and bored with it. Yes, you can be on multiple channels with a client/decent applet, but people who find 1 goes to fast aren't going to want to try to deal with more..

It's a nice idea, and was worth a try, but it didn't work and people seem happy enough with msn 90% of the time - those who aren't (like myself and a few other pc forums members) have our own channel elsewhere on IRC networks.

But it doesnt have to be an Offical room. You could just create one where a few people go to talk.

A company the size of SR that's trying to maintain a structured community may not want some rookie like me going off and spoiling what it may want to do in the future. Also it's not very good for PR when a company like SR has its community forums on someone elses server.

Thirdly, as the lack of response to this thread shows, I don't think there'd be the interest unless it was some sort of official venture. So I'll wait and see if any of the staff pick this one up, if not, drop it.

Why don't you just create a room on a server. It's not too difficult to actually do, just find a network and register a channel, then set a few people as Ops.
