If there's only one Premiership player who's had people talking about him non-stop since he first arrived on the scene, this scene, then it has to be Everton's 17-year-old "wonder-kid", Wayne Rooney. The now-fully-capped England international has had everyone talking about him for more months than I can remember, now; ever since he scored '"THAT goal" against Arsenal, at Highbury. It's like Michael Owen all-over-again - only he's a blue this time, and not a red. And it's after the games like the one at Highbury as a mere 16-year-old; and, of course, his 'competitive' debut for England against Turkey, that you can clearly see just what all this fuss is really all about.

This boy's got something special!

At first, I was never a real "Wayne Rooney Fan" (and I'm still not really, today). I always thought he was a young player vastly-over-hyped - just like Michael Owen, before him. And no matter how-many goals he scores, or who he scores against, I will still feel this way. Nothing will change that. But why does everyone really rate him so highly? What is it that makes him any better than any other upcoming youngster with first-team experience under his belt, already? That's the part I don't understand...

If it's the goals he has scored for Everton throughout the season, then surely Chelsea's Carlton Cole should've been in the England squad a long time ahead of Rooney?! Cole may be slightly older, but as an outstanding Englishman in the modern Chelsea side, he has shown under-fire Claudio Ranieri that he is the type of player he can rely on when Jimmy-Floyd and Gianfranco Zola are out-of-action. And several times this season, we've already seen him come off the bench to score - Solskjaer-style - even as a replacement for either Hasselbaink, or Gudjonsson.
Why he is only in the England Under-21's squad I do not know! He's the type of player our England side will need without Alan Shearer - a goal-scorer. But perhaps "the great" Sven-Goran Eriksson is only one for the hyped - like 17-year-old Rooney...

One of Rooney's other good assets on the ball come with his dribbling skills, and abillity to take-on some of the game's toughest opponents, without showing even the slightest glimps of fear, or second-thought. And this is something he's been doing all-season-long - you only have to look at his goal at Highbury, recently, where he forced Pascal Cygan back into his own box, before hitting the back-of-the-net.
But Newcastle's Jermaine Jenas is a player who I feel posseses a greater dribbling abillities than the young Evertonian. And I'm glad to see the former-Nottingham Forest youth has already made his mark against Australia, after a season in which a "doubtful" has come in to Sir Bobby Robson's side, and shown that even he can make the step-up from Division 1, and succeed in performing well.
England's left-sided problems STILL haven't been solved. And after his second-half performance against the Aussie's there, aswell as a number of games he's played in at St.James' Park; I am starting to believe that Jenas could be the man we've been looking for, for so-many years, now. And that is why I feel he deserves to be in the England team, more-so than Wayne Rooney - another young-striker.

And if it's young strikers Eriksson's after, then why on Earth doesn't he give on-form Leeds' striker Alan Smith a second-chance, after a rather impressive England debut, a few months back. If he can call-up a "cheat" who has struggled to find-his-feet at Highbury, in Francis Jeffers, then where's the harm in bringing in a man who can score goals when you need them - a man who has been linked with Summer-moves to Old Trafford and Anfield, throughout the season. It shouldn't matter how his club are performing - just look at David "butter-fingers" James the other night. Every player gets sent-off from time-to-time... He just shouldn't be saying 'no' to an experienced goal-scorer like Alan Smith!

But if Alan Smith isn't his cup-of-tea, then Jermaine Defoe's performances at Upton Park this season can hardly be ignored. With-or-without Paulo DiCanio, or Freddie Kanouté - this lad's still up for it -- no matter how close West Ham may be from Relegation. At such a young age he's proven he can score goals - even against the biggest of Premiership teams. He's got his fair-share of them, too. And also attracted the interest from Sir Alex Ferguson, on a number of occasions.
When was the last-time you saw Wayne Rooney linked with a move to Manchester United?!? Has he even scored past the Red Devils, yet?!?!
If he can play a Frank Lampard, then surely former-Charlton man, Defoe, should've been in that England side a long-time-ago??

And there are a few goalkeepers who deserve more than 45-minutes of football to represent their country at one of the highest of levels. Both Leeds' Paul Robinson and even Everton's Richard Wright spring-to-mind. But with all this talk about Wayne Rooney, and nothing else, there's no time for consideration.

Despite what many journalists and even the England manager seem to think, Wayne Rooney isn't the only up-and-coming youngster who deserves his chance to play for England at the highest level. Sure, he may have had a good game against Turkey in that "must-win" fixture we did win; but you only have to look-around to see how there are so-many-other players in the Premeriship that, in theory, should perhaps be sitting where the hyped-up "beefcake-boy" is today.
If you ask me, he's still too-young and in-experienced to be there. And I believe all this hype and pressure so-early-on is only gonna ruin him as a footballer, inflating his ego to that of Arséne Wenger's standards, while turning him into a money-grabber before he's even 25! Nice one, "Sven"!! That's another player gone-to-waste.

Everyone, just shut-up about Rooney, okay?!?!?
Give some other, "more-deserving", youngsters a chance.

No matter what team sven picks there will always be someone who disagrees.
Rooney for his age is a very talented player. Don't let his age be the deciding factor in whether he should be picked or not.

Sure many deserve teh chance, Beatiee and Rooney for me would be the first two to start the next half for England.
Seems there are too many players who think that their place in the team is safe no matter what and maybe it is time that Sven showed them that to be in the team they have to be the best at that position.

Its like the aged old debate of LeTisser. Probably one of the most talented players to watch when he was on form yet never really got the chance for England.

I for one like the way Rooney plays, enjoyable to watch and has a lot of promise. Give him a few more games (if he gets picked again)
Might just be he will prove if he is worth all the talk.

Yep agree, he is a good player but he is only what Heskey isn't and thats not an outstanding achievement.

I have never been one to turn on managers when the going gets tough, but i am starting to dislike Sven. He is weak and afraid of the Media as he saw what they did with the Ulrika story. He just bends to their will and the will of the top two managers.

I have far more respect for managers such as Alex Ferguson and Claudio Rainieri who do what they think is best rather than what the press wanted.
Rainieri is a good example, chelsea aren't top of the league, but Rainieri recieved a lot of criticism over his strange looking tactical changes, but he has stuck with them and now chelsea are in the best position they hae been in since 99 with 5 points clearance on 5th place.

Sven However has irritated me. Heskey, Jeffers and Rooney, not to mention others have got in because the Media love them (Jeffers, Rooney) or because he can't make his own decisions and so goes with what other managers think are good players (Houllier-heskey). His selection Process borders on Moronic. How are John Terry and Jermaine Defoe still uncapped? Why was Beattie dropped? How is Heskey still playing when a striker of mush lesser repute (Vassell) has levelled his strike ratio in a third of the matches?

Although i don't blame him, as the Media would crucify him if he did it, he shouldn't be afraid to substitute Beckham when he is playing badly, although one of Englands best player, like any one else he can have an off day and that was seen in turkey when he had a shocker, Dyer should have come on for him early in the second half.

Rooney has done some serious queue jumping here, Beattie is the deserved starter, then Defoe then Carlton cole and Alan Smith. Then Rooney. The only thing about Alan Smith is that he does not score enough. However unlike Heskey who actually does very little for england, Alan Smith is one of the best support strikers around he played a very large part in 5 of leeds 6 goals on saturday and should be playing if that is the kind of striker sven wanted at the time.
