Apparently so, according to Sony's VP of R&D at SCEI Shinichi Okomoto. Ken Kuturagi (Mr. PlayStyation to you) more recently revealed concrete, though thoroughly unsurprising plans for the embryonic platform
And, yes, it's all about convergence. Sony Computer Entertainment expect to sit at the sharp end of the entire Sony corp's strategy for the next couple of decades at least. Having provided much of the company's recent revenue with PSOne, SCEI are about to take their first steps into the online world with the imminent (march) release of the first PS2 narrowband modems and browser software. Broadband will follow, but true straight-from-the-box convergence will have to wait for PS3. The machine will be a single platform hub, the outlet of a direct distribution system for all of Sony's interests, including music, movies and, probably, TV. Online banking, shopping and possibly kitchen sinks are also part of the long term plan. "
