With the release of Phantasy Star online ahead of us on the 9th of Febuary we shall see a whole revelisation in the way we play computer games on consoles. This is something that we are all looking forward to (if you are a dc owner) We are aware of the capabilities with Quake III so we all know what to expect.

But there is one thing that could ruin it all...

The one thing that is very likely to take place during the course of the Phantasy Star Online period and that has got something to do with the action replay cdx.

This only just became available for the dreamcast and we find that they are being put under preasure by the buyers of there product to release action replay codes for the games that have online functions. If this happens we might find ourselfs having to deal with the same situation as blizard dealing with hackers on there battle.net servers. Diablo 2 suffers this the most they cannot do anything about it because there are so many.

If this happens with PSO then it will totally ruin the whole objective of the game. Sega have stopped cheating on the servers but they will not be able to stop the cheating when the action replay codes come out. What tsega have to do is dervise a system where the servers can be monitered by humans or computers and search for any extreme changes in the game that had occured. If they can do this it may be possible to cut the risk of these "hacks" or codes spreading to most of the users.

Can we stop this?

No there is nothing we can do and there is nothing that sega can really do apart from employing lots of staff to go around and look on the computer servers for hackers and cheats.

Sega have a risk that could ruin there game if not stopped and there is really nothing we or they can do to stop it

Online cheating has already begun on some of the japanese online racing games. Will Quake III soon be hacked upon and therefore ruining that. We can't tell but it will hapen soon and we must be prepared for it!

I suppose there isn't a lot we can about cheating. Peiople always have done and always will do. It started as Up, Down, Left, Right, Hold A and press START! Sonic one, people who did this either wanted to plat a certain level or more likely wanted to fight Dr. Robotnic but couldn't get passed Labryinth Zone 3!

Although there is stil an option to cheat I still think that maybe, people will get some genuine fun out of playing on-line. I think that only a small majority of people, who either like to spoil peoples fun or are so bad at videogames that they have to cheat, will cheat.

I think that you'll find that cheaters will be picked up by people and people just won't let them play. Hopefuly PSO will show certain statistics that enable people to pick out cheaters.

I think that a lot of dreamcast fans will get on fine and have a crackin' time playing the game I wouldn't worry about the odd loser who comes along...think of all the time you will have in genuine non-cheating rooms.

Also there might be a 'head of game' type player who says who can come in...hopefully cheaters reputations will preceed them and they will be blocked from a lot of the games!

Don't Worry,

The Game
