Sony's position of influence over the games market, achieved in a short period of time, has been nothing short of astounding. So, will this dominance continue? Well, if the launch games of the PS2 are anything to go by - only if things improve.
The console is billed as one of the most powerful to date. It certainly looks the business and when it first powers up you cannot help but feel a thrill of anticipation as the new, very sexy, start-up logo appears. Load a game, however, and you'll realise that, at the very least, you should have waited for its capabilities to have been proven with a decent raft of games, before you shelled out.
So far, very few of the launch titles are original - they are spruced up versions of games that have been available for ages. Tekken Tag, for example, won't live up to your expectations if you have seen Dreamcast's superior Soul Calibur. Graphics are weak with tiny characters and no fine details (and we were using a TV nearly a metre wide!).
Matters do not improve when playing Ridge Racer, which looks very little better than its PS1 version. ISS and Fifa are more exciting, and graphics have undoubtedly improved. On the basis of the available games, it looks like Sony has launched the PS2 with little forethought, and it really doesn't live up to expectations. However, the marketing push behind the console will ensure that people will still rush to buy it.
Whether the PlayStation2 is the future of gaming still remains to be seen. There are some very exciting games on the horizon, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final fantasy X, but as the Dreamcast already has several great games to its name, and is considerably lower in price, our advice is to wait until prices fall and the serious games are launched in the spring.
