I'm waiting for her, actually I'm still waiting, as she is now 10 minutes late. The sun isn't shining as brightly as it had been and the breeze seems much cooler. Surely she hadn't stood me up, why say she'd meet me if she didn't mean it? She hadn't struck me as that type of person. Maybe she'd had an accident, Gods how awful. I try to contact her on her mobile but it is switched off. Maybe she'd got tied up at work, but why hadn't she called me? Maybe she'd just forgot, could I cope with that? Maybe I was waiting on the wrong park bench?
I stand up and call the dog back just as a car arrives in the small car park and Jenny jumps out. "Sorry, I'm so glad you're still here. I had to stop to buy some trainers as I left mine at home." she said, smiling at me. "Well you could have phoned" I complained. I'd just run through a spectrum of emotion and was feeling a little petulant. "Um, I left it at home with the trainers. Anyway they are noisy intrusive things and I rarely remember to pick mine up". I turn slightly to one side to quietly turn mine off. Just then the dogs runs up to her - a two year old German Shepherd, still all legs, ears and tail which presently was wagging so hard I thought he was going to take off. Not that I blamed the dog, I also felt like jumping all over the place. "Get down" I yell at him but Jenny is just laughing and her laugh is so infectious I can't help but smile at them.
"I'll race you both to the trees" she yells and she's off with the dog hot on her heels. She looks comical, not that she'd care, racing along in her navy blue suit with her new purple, glittery trainers and her blonde pony tail seeming to wag in time with the dog's tail. I can't help myself as I laugh aloud and give chase.
I catch up with them eventually, Jenny is leaning against a tree slightly out of breath but still laughing. She stands on tiptoes to kiss my cheek and links her fingers into mine as we walk under the trees.
The day is perfect, the sun is shining, the dog is now trying to catch squirrels, I am walking through the woods and Jenny is here.
*looks out the window in search of a rainbow*
And I liked it, by the way. Velly good.
