I suppose this is actualy more of a Life post, but it was actualy the sport that brought it on. Today has been one beautiful day. I live on the edge of Dartmoor, and it was electric up there today. Cloudless blue skies, thatched villages in wooded valleys, and the sun. And warmth. All very stereotyped, but one that I love - That old sort of 'Tetleys wedding party ad' feeling, if you know what I mean. 'Good chaps', in a good country, and the rugby enforced that.
All I hear these days is how lame our country is, how pathetic we have become, all the problems, the weather (what in gods name do you expect - Morrocan temperatures??!!!!!!!), the inner city problems etc. But actualy, in a purely natural sense, and the old English traditions, of the symbolic roses, and all that rubbish, I think England, and the British Isles as a whole is a wonderful place. A new Travellers guide called the British Isles 'the most beautiful island in the world'. I, in a purely stupidly patriotic sense, agree. Of course, we have problems, any country does, but I can't help but feel how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful place, both naturaly and historicaly (as this makes you too). Both Scotland and Wales are also wonderful places, with quite stunning natural beauty, but I cannot comment on their histories and traditions, as I am not eithewr Welsh nor Scottish.
I'm not against foreigners. They can come and live here and welcome. I just love the countryside we have, the traditional stereotypes of pubs, villages, and historic towns, the history, the quite fantastic culture we do have (well, most of the time). Its weird, a feeling that has been building for a while. Despite all the situations now, the problems, and things like that, I can't help but love England. Its a wonderful place. Well, Devon is anyway....... :P
Ramble over.
Him: If you could live in ANY city in the world, where would you live?
Me: Here, London.
Him: But wouldn't you want to go to, like, New York or Las Vegas
Now, I've been to both. And England generally is ten times better. He has just been infected by adverts and films that they are the cool cities, when, compared to, in fact, much of Europe, they're commercialist balls. Nothing but ads, ads, and more ads and general fakiness. They're not particuarly bad places, but a lot of people don't see how great Britain and the Isles are. The whole Royal Family business, Parliament and political-economic-y-stuff may not be good, but any interesting country has issues. I found America kinda boring because so much of it is really isolated from other places.
But there's nothing wrong in what you said.
> The majority of people are morons and the climate is awful
Well let's face it, that statement could describe the rest of the world. The first bit at least.
