It made the Americans fear for their lives, it was one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever, one of the worst films ever and one of the best musical stories ever!
I'm a huge fan of the War of the Worlds created by H.G.Wells! I'm currently listening to the song "Thunderchild" which is part of the double CD/LP album!
The actual story is this:
It's the end of the 19th Century and Mars is losing it's ability to support life. The Martians need to find somewhere to live so they decide to conquer Earth! The gravity may be stronger but they can still survive the change.
However, the primitive beings called humans don't want to be farmed for their blood and to become slaves of another race so they try to retaliate. This of course fails and the Martians take over!
People go into hiding mostly in the sewers but they have no food and nothing to protect them from the cold! they are now refugees!
The martians start building their colonies when suddenly one of them suddenly stops moving! Then another, and another until they are all dead! the Martians had totally wiped out harmful bactera and didn't need an immune system. They totally forgot about that when they came to Earth!
That is just a very brief description of it!
The musical version is excellent! The best song is "forever autumn" the musical version is the story told by music and a little narration. Jeff Wayne also had a game made out of it for the PC which is excellent but the PS version is just Pants!
I wish I had heard the Radio Broadcast in America! It was the story told as news bulletins and the Americans didn't realise it was just a story and started going crazy! A huge amount of people became suicidal over it!
The film is ok but is nothing like the original story! The game is much more like it than the film!

I'm OBSESSED!
It's a kind of Command & Conquer style game but you don't actually build in the battles because these things need time to happen!
The AI is very good, the graphics could've been slightly better but it follows the storyline almost exactly!
And yes, unfortunatley the translation to celluloid and the game didn't quite do it, I've seen the naff PSX version, but not he PC one, but I'll look out for it now following your post.
Jeff Wayne certainly hit the right note with his melodic interpretation of the storyline, I remember listening to the album about 20 years ago, and can still hum the tunes.
Shame the game didn't really live up to expectations, perhaps they can do more with it when it is redesigned and brought out on the 128-bit console, should that ever happen.
